The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt concludes the story of the witcher Geralt of Rivia, protagonist of the series. Continuing from The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Geralt has finally recovered his memory and embarks on a new and personal mission in search of Ciri, a girl whom he considers to be a daughter and of whom he has no news for some time, while the order of the world is coming to a definitive change.

The game begins with Geralt, accompanied by the old witcher Vesemir, in search of his old lover Yennefer. Once found, the sorceress brings Geralt to the Nilfgaard emperor, Emhyr var Emreis, who instructs the two to find his daughter Ciri, who discovered that she has returned to their world and be hunted by the Wild Hunt.

Thus began a long search in the Velen (a no man's land tormented by the third northern war) where the witcher is forced, to obtain clues, to help the Blood Baron (local lord) and to meet the Megere, terrible and evil witches who use of dark magic. Geralt discovers that Ciri has passed through those places, but then she has gone to Novigrad.

The witcher reaches nearby Novigrad, a neutral city between Velen and Redania, the only kingdom left at war against Nilfgaard; where wizards are persecuted. Here he will discover that his friend Dandelion, the famous bard, is the only one who has actually met Ciri and therefore knows where the girl is at the moment. Aided by many old acquaintances, including his old flame Triss Merigold and the dwarf Zoltan, Geralt will have to face both the underworld and the witch hunters of the city to find and subsequently rescue Dandelion. Unfortunately, the bard reveals that Ciri, in danger, has teleported elsewhere, and is no longer in Novigrad.

With no more useful clues, Geralt decides to leave the continent and sets sail for the Skellige islands, the area where the sorceress Yennefer was investigating. The two, now reunited, to get results will be forced to steal and use a dangerous artifact that allows you to review scenes from the past and to use necromancy to talk to a man killed by the Wild Hunt who had met Ciri. The only thing the two can find out is that Uma, a little monster Geralt met at the beginning of his trip to the Velen, is the key to finding the girl.

Geralt retrieves Uma and takes him to Kaer Morhen where, with the help of Yennefer and the witchers Vesemir, Lambert and Eskel, he tries to find out who the monster is actually. Successful in the intent, Uma returns to its original form and turns out to be the elven sage Avallac'h, who finally reveals where Ciri is currently. The girl is hidden on the island of the Mists, but will be immediately perceived and reached by the Wild Hunt in case she tries to leave from there.

Geralt finds and retrieves Ciri from the Isle of Mists and decides to gather in Kaer Morhen all the friends willing to help him face and possibly defeat the Wild Hunt forever. The clash turns out to be very hard and ends with the defeat of the heroes and the death of the old Vesemir, which however causes a blind fury in Ciri which unleashes its powers, managing to momentarily put the enemies to flight.

The heroes decide to weaken the Wild Hunt by defeating his generals, then ambushing directly their King: Eredin.

After gathering the magicians of the Lodge and finding a way to attract the Wild Hunt, the last battle against the enemy is fought with the help of the armies of Nilfgaard and Skellige. Ciri knocks down the last general of the Hunt and Geralt confronts and defeats the king, Eredin.

After the victory, however, a terrible storm broke out caused by the White Frost, a catastrophe that according to the prophecies will lead to the destruction of the world, and the cause of the invasion of the Wild Hunt, since it was also about to destroy their world. Geralt, no longer finding Ciri and thinking that Avallac'h has betrayed them, runs to the tower from which the storm seems to be unleashed, helped by Yennefer who, however, remains behind. Here the witcher finds the elf and discovers that he is actually helping Ciri, determined to go through a portal and probably sacrifice her life to end the White Frost.

Ciri manages to save the world from catastrophe but, depending on the player's choices, she can come back alive or die. If he survives, always depending on the player's choices, he can stay with Geralt and live as a witcher or decide to take the place of his father as empress on the throne of Nilfgaard, who in this scenario won the third northern war.

Geralt's story continues in the Blood & Wine DLC, moving to a fairy tale kingdom, Touissant. By arranging an old villa with a vineyard donated as a reward by the queen, Geralt will finally lay down his arms and spend the rest of his life in peace. Based on the choices made by the player, Triss or Yennefer will go to live in Geralt's new home.
